The following shots are from Egypt, September 1999: This series is from one of the most famous monuments in the world, the Sphinx. There are some special features you should notice. The lines that run vertical (like the space between teeth) are examples of rain water erosion. The patterns that run horizontal are from flooding, sand or wind.
In recent history, the Sphinx was The Sphinx was covered at least twice to its neck in sand, which means there was no time for the rain water to due this kind of damage, unless we go much farther back in time. When was the last time there was enough rain in the Sahara desert to cause such an extensive amount of erosion? It wasn't just a couple of years to create the depth and detail we see here. Computer models and geologists say that 10,000 - 12,000 years ago was the last time the Sahara had that much rain.
